Profiles in Courage: Taiwan

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, China has moved quickly and decisively to save its citizens from the onslaught of the deadly disease. And no, we’re not referring to the “People’s Republic” of China (PRC). We mean the Republic of China (aka Taiwan). The truth is that Taiwan identified an emerging public health crisis as its belligerent neighbor (the other China) was busy covering up Coronavirus cases and threatening journalists and doctors such as Dr. Li Wenliang who sounded the alarm. And, for pursing a rapid, diligent response to the Coronavirus even in the face of hostility and aggression from the PRC and the taxpayer-funded World Health Organization (WHO), the Republic of China (Taiwan) is absolutely a Profile in Courage.

Growing National Healthcare Coalition Urges Congress to Reject Bureaucratic Price Controls in Next Relief Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Today, the Coalition Against Rate-Setting (CARS) urged Congress to keep the next Coronavirus relief bill clean and reject any attempts by lawmakers to institute rate-setting (price controls) as a way to “fix” surprise medical billing. Surprise medical billing occurs when patients discharged from an in-network hospital receive an out-of-network bill from an attending doctor. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.) have indicated their willingness to insert rate-setting into the next relief bill to address this issue, despite well-documented evidence on the harms of healthcare price controls. CARS, a nationwide coalition of free market and consumer groups has doubled in membership from 14 in January to 29 today. A full listing of the organizations in CARS can be found here.

Coalition Supports Immediate Investigation Into The World Health Organization

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Today, a coalition of 15 taxpayer and consumer groups urged Congress to support President Trump’s decision to hold an immediate investigation into the World Health Organization (WHO) and launch their own inquiry. Pending the results of the investigation, the coalition called on all lawmakers to cease funding the failed bureaucracy and instead work closely with the private sector to advance the public health priorities neglected by the WHO. The WHO has come under significant international scrutiny in recent weeks for chronically mismanaging the Covid-19 response and promoting misinformation spread by the Chinese Communist Party. U.S. taxpayers have contributed more than $3.5 billion to the WHO since 2010.

TPA Thanks President Trump For Strong Leadership In Halting Funds To The World Health Organization

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA), a non-partisan Washington DC- based advocacy organization representing taxpayers and consumers today praised President Donald Trump for announcing a halt on funding to the scandal-ridden World Health Organization (WHO) until a thorough review is undertaken into their mismanagement of the COVID-19 crisis.

The EPA Is Literally Making People Sick

As the deadly coronavirus takes its toll on countless families, healthcare workers are doing their best to get patients the medicine and equipment they desperately need. But medical devices can do more harm than good unless properly sterilized and disinfected by applying agents such as Ethylene Oxide (EtO) gas. And, because of deeply flawed federal studies and subsequent state and local actions based on this shoddy science, production of sterilizing agents such as EtO has been put on the backburner. Policymakers must examine all the evidence at hand and keep patients safe from COVID-19 contamination.

Profiles in Courage: Navy Captain Brett Crozier

Whistleblowers play an important role in protecting democracy and fostering a transparent, responsive government. Unfortunately, whistleblowers are seldomly supported and are often subject to harassment or retaliation. The latest form of retaliation came from the U.S. Navy when Navy Capt. Brett Crozier was relieved of his command of the USS Theodore Roosevelt on April 2 after sounding the alarm about dangerous conditions onboard his ship. Capt. Crozier knew of the likely consequences that his actions would entail, yet nonetheless acted quickly and decisively in the best interests of his sailors. And for that, Capt. Crozier is an upstanding Profile in Courage.

The World Health Organization Is Out Of Control

As the United Nations’ dedicated public health agency, one might assume that the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing everything in its power to fight the deadly coronavirus. Unfortunately, the lavishly taxpayer-funded global bureaucracy has fallen down on the job, seeming more concerned with vindicating China than providing leadership to the rest of the world. With annual “contributions” to the WHO totaling roughly half a billion dollars, U.S. taxpayers deserve better. They should demand greater transparency and oversight before more money is wasted propping up a failed organization.

Protectionism Won’t Protect Patients or Healthcare Workers

There’s a mad dash to contain the Coronavirus pandemic as policymakers frantically search for everything and anything that could give patients a fighting chance against the deadly disease. The federal government is making large-scale purchases of needed medical supplies to contain the pandemic and has been procuring promising pharmaceuticals that could turn the tide against COVID-19. Unfortunately, the Trump administration may soon shortchange its own efforts by requiring that drugs and medical supplies purchased with taxpayer dollars are produced in America. This shortsighted policy will only limit supplies and increase costs for households at an unprecedented and tumultuous time. Federal officials should consider supplies and drugs from all countries, instead of hobbling the healthcare system for no reason.

Watchdog Urges President Trump to Reinstate CARES Act Inspector General

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) urged President Trump to reinstate the inspector general (IG) tasked with overseeing the disbursement of more than $2.2 trillion in relief spending authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. ABC News and the Associated Press reported on April 7 that, “President Donald Trump has sidelined the inspector general who was tapped to chair a special oversight board of the $2.2 trillion economic package…Glenn Fine, the acting Defense Department inspector general and a veteran watchdog, had been selected by peers last month for the oversight position.” This act by the President leaves it unclear as to who will monitor relief package spending for waste, fraud, and abuse.

New York should buy ventilators, not crony “green” deals

In the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, dozens of governors and hundreds of local officials have shown critical foresight and invested the necessary resources into healthcare and emergency response. But, the true mark of a leader is not only what they do during a crisis but also how they prepared ahead of time. The pandemic has exposed skewed priorities and wasteful spending that should have been devoted toward procuring critical healthcare supplies. Case in point: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo handing Elon Musk $750 million to build a solar plant when the money could have been used for more important purposes such as preparing for a pandemic. Keeping the Empire State safe from the coronavirus means saying no to crony “green” deals that harm taxpayers and consumers.
