Time To End DoD’s Earmark Dependence

Federal spending is once again in the news in Washington, with the government once again running up against its statutory borrowing limit. Much of the conversation and debate on Capitol Hill has surrounded entitlement and welfare spending. However, another culprit, the Department of Defense (DoD) has been putting an enormous strain on federal spending for years – especially as it pertains to earmarks. Sadly, this has gone largely without debate.

Bill of the Month — May 2023: Cutting Paperwork for Taxpayers Act

This critical legislation would make interest generated on delayed tax refunds tax-exempt. The burden of the IRS failing to expeditiously process Americans’ tax returns should not fall on filers, who should rightly be rewarded for the agency’s delay.

A Lot at Stake During Today’s In-person White House Debt Ceiling Meeting

While it’s encouraging that the two sides will meet this afternoon for further talks, the White House needs to soften its position and take this issue seriously. It needs to take tax hikes off the table, recognize our spending trajectory is unsustainable, and be open to re-evaluating spending enacted by his signature. This afternoon’s meeting must yield progress towards a deal that can pass both houses of Congress.
