Time to admit it: The Postal Service has a union problem

In life, only three things can be certain: death, taxes, and job security at the U.S. Postal Service. But, unless the beleaguered agency keeps its labor costs under control, taxes and stamp prices will probably have to be increased to pay for Postal “lifers.” With another lopsided deal with a major employee union, the USPS has signaled to taxpayers and consumers that it has little interest in reining in expenses. The agency will run out of cash by 2024, absent significant reforms and better deals made by leadership. Millions of mail consumers deserve better than a Postal Service that values excuses and passing the buck over much-needed comprehensive reforms.

Speaker Pelosi Grandstanding on Postal Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) slammed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for calling the House of Representatives back to D.C. in order to micromanage the United States Postal Service (USPS) instead of addressing Coronavirus relief. Speaker Pelosi has also called for Members of Congress to host press events at local post offices across the country. There has been increased controversy over USPS shipping delays and “mismanagement” related to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and Speaker Pelosi has publicly criticized his management and capabilities.

TPA Delivers Answers to Pressing Postal Questions

There is no shortage of misinformation about the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), a beleaguered agency that lost $8.8 billion last year and has more than $160 billion in unfunded liabilities. Since Postmaster General Louis DeJoy assumed leadership of the agency on June 15, former Presidents, lawmakers, and even famed musicians have alleged that there’s a conspiracy to hobble the USPS. Fortunately, there’s no evidence that’s the case. While USPS leadership could’ve certainly done a better job of communicating postal policy changes, the changes over the past two months are continuations – and sometimes accelerations – of longstanding changes at the USPS. And, until more comprehensive reforms are undertaken, the agency will continue to bleed red ink and function inefficiently ahead of the 2020 election. To keep taxpayers, voters, and postal consumers in the know, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) has answered some key questions about the state of the USPS.

Watchdog Criticizes Misinformation on Postal Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) slammed pundits for pedaling misinformation on the state of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). Alarmism over the USPS increased considerably after August 7th when Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced the elevation of key agency staff-members to executive roles. Critics labeled this move the “Friday Night Massacre” despite no evidence of widespread firings to consolidate DeJoy’s power. Even more controversy arose on August 11th in response to reports that mail sorting machines were being removed from processing facilities. Critics were quick to resort to conspiracies about these removals, despite removals from only a handful of facilities.

SUMMER READING: International Governmental Organizations (IGOs)

Hopefully, members of Congress relaxing beachside and poolside (as well as those still sweltering in the Washington, D.C. heat) remembered to put their sunscreen on. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation, after all, will make it downright painful to put that suit on once September rolls around. But not so fast, because according to one mysterious international agency, a key ingredient of sunscreen called titanium dioxide is “possibly carcinogenic”, despite “inadequate evidence in humans” being presented for analysis. The organization making this scary-sounding claim is the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a sub-agency of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Watchdog Praises Ninth Circuit Ruling on FCC Reforms

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) praised the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit for upholding the Federal Communications Commissions’ (FCC) infrastructure reforms. Released today, the Court decision upholds the vast majority of three FCC orders meant to streamline deployment of 5G small-cell installations and allow for expanded internet access across the country. Critically, the Ninth Circuit backed the FCC’s 2018 order to limit the fees that localities can charge providers for installing 5G devices in their jurisdictions.

Biden’s Broadband Plan Would Promote Risky Taxpayer-Funded Networks

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s broadband plan would promote the growth of government-owned networks, which studies by the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) have shown to be bad news for taxpayers. Biden recently released his agenda on his website as he gears up for the November presidential election against President Trump. A healthy part of the section on infrastructure delves into Biden’s broadband goals. While the former vice president holds the admirable goal to “bring broadband to every American household,” critics might question his methods. Biden says he will direct the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the Department of Agriculture (USDA) “to support cities and towns that want to build municipally owned broadband networks.”

Watchdog Condemns New Proposal to Ban E-Cigarettes

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) strongly condemned a proposal by Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) that would ban the sale of all reduced risk alternatives to tobacco products. Earlier today, Rep. Krishnamoorthi wrote to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Stephen Hahn claiming that e-cigarette users are more likely to be diagnosed with Covid-19 and called on the FDA to, “clear the market of all e-cigarettes for the duration of the coronavirus crisis.”

No more billionaire bailouts

In its rush to respond to the pandemic, the federal government has put fairness and transparency on the back burner. Small-business owners across the country have paid the price, waiting far too long to tap needed resources as large, politically connected companies freely take taxpayer dollars. Lawmakers evidently haven’t learned their lesson from previous recessions, when relief programs morphed into payouts for the rich and politically connected. Lawmakers should end this regressive redistribution and provide a hand up to families and businesses that genuinely need help.

Watchdog Calls for Real Tax Relief to Replace Executive Actions

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) urged lawmakers to address recent changes to payroll tax liability and unemployment insurance implemented via executive actions. TPA also criticized President Trump for circumventing Congress by passing these executive actions. On August 8, President Trump signed an executive memorandum suspending the withholding, deposit, and payment of employees’ payroll taxes from September 1 through the end of the year. This deferral applies to workers earning less than $8,000 per month.
