Profile in Courage: Rep. Scott Peters (D-Calif.)

Plenty of lawmakers come to Washington, D.C. with unusual resume lines and bizarre career trajectories. But Rep. Scott Peters (D-Calif.) may have the most interesting background of them all. The lawmaker went from cleaning pigeon cages to analyzing complex economic issues at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to serving his constituents on Capitol Hill. And, once in Congress, Rep. Peters has continued to deny convention by taking a series of admirable stands for taxpayers and consumers on a range of pressing public policy issues. It’s not easy to do battle against the fashionable big government populism of the day, but the California Democrat is ready to roll up his sleeves and do what’s right. And for doing the right thing even when it isn’t politically expedient, Rep. Scott Peters is a Profile in Courage.

Proposed Federal Standards Could Have Farms and Consumers Feeling the Heat

Businesses across the country could soon be facing some serious heat from federal regulators. In response to worker deaths and injuries spurred by dehydration and roiling temperatures, the Biden administration will soon propose a federal heat standard via the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) rulemaking process (the same agency tasked with implementing vaccine mandates). And already, familiar fault lines are emerging between labor groups such as United Farm Workers and businesses and entrepreneurs fearful of runaway costs. Before overhauling federal rules, regulators should consider the unintended consequences of reinventing the wheel and mull less costly alternatives. OSHA can ensure that farmworkers have shade and water without mandating costly paperwork requirements and heat illness plans.

On Expensive Reconciliation Bills, We Need Hearings

It has been no secret that a lot of taxpayer dollars have been spent in the last year. In fact, trillions have been added to the national debt with Congress showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. What has been a secret, however, is the negotiation process behind each of the bills that accumulated this debt. Away from microphones and cameras, Congressional leaders made backroom deals and then jammed the legislation through with little to no debate. The American people were left with the hefty price tags.

Congress Needs to Stop $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Bill

Looming in the shadows of the fight over the Democrats’ $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill is the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure agreement. Congressional progressives insist they won’t lend their support to the latter without passage of the former. On the flip side, moderates of both parties are balking at any consideration of the $3.5 trillion package without a hard and fast assurance that infrastructure will get a vote. This proverbial game of legislative chicken is threatening to grind Congress to a halt heading into the end of the year. And, even though the $1.2 trillion bill is a pawn in a bigger game of political chess, taxpayers need to be reminded of the wasteful spending in the legislation.

Watchdog Supports Lawsuit Against Texas Social Media Bill

The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA), a nonprofit, nonpartisan taxpayer and consumer advocacy organization, supports a lawsuit filed today against the State of Texas regarding the state’s new social media law. The law violates the First Amendment by severely limiting the ability for online services to moderate their digital property as they see fit. Defending the unconstitutional law is expected to cost Texas taxpayers tens of millions of dollars.

Democrats Look to Introduce a Tax on Plastic

According to a report in The Hill, Senate Finance Democrats are looking at introducing a tax on virgin plastic to help generate the funds needed for their $3.5 trillion spending bill. While environmentalists like to clout such taxes as positive step towards addressing climate change, this latest proposal is simply just a tax on consumers to pay for Democrats’ spending bill and flies in the face of President Joe Biden’s promise to not raise taxes on Americans earning $400,000 or less.
