Taxpayer Watchdog Pans New “Compromise” Tax and Spend Agenda

The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) blasted the new framework announced by the administration and congressional Democrats today. Despite being marketed as a reasonable compromise between moderates and progressives, the package would spend exorbitant amounts of money at a time where our nation is facing rising inflation and a looming debt crisis.

Consumer Group Opposes FCC Nominations

Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA), a nonprofit, nonpartisan taxpayer and consumer advocacy organization opposes the nomination Jessica Rosenworcel as Chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Gigi Sohn as FCC Commissioner, supporters of failed anti-consumer policy like government-owned networks. TPA is concerned about the direction of both the FCC and FTC under the Biden Administration, and hopes to see increased transparency and prioritization of consumers moving forward.

TPA’s Tricks and Treats 2021

Even if the supermarket shelves aren’t brimming with Halloween candy and decorations, it’s that time of year again for the sour and sweet of Halloween. Consumers deciding to flock to the movie theaters for the first time in 19 months will find plenty of spooky new features, ranging from Halloween Kills to a full-length film about a…lamb. Oh, and James Bond is about to be replaced yet again, which is always an unsettling process. But, there are far more scarier things afoot in Washington, D.C. than a masked slasher or a haunted mammal. Lawmakers are (once again) raising hell on taxpayers and consumers via historically high spending levels and onerous new rules. So, sit tight and take a gasp and gander at this year’s Taxpayer Tricks and Treats.

Here is my second stock photo attempt, just in time for tax season. This one didn't require any expensive props either but I did have to use my son's glue stick to hold the sheets together. Feel free to use this image, just link to www.SeniorLiving.Org

Congress Should Say No To An IRS Power Grab

It’s hardly surprising that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) often receives low marks from American taxpayers. After all, simply filing your tax return can be a headache, let alone fighting for deductions or dealing with an audit. A recent survey conducted by Gallup found that Americans' view that the IRS was doing an "excellent" or "good" job has dropped from 50 to 37 percent in the last two years. It’s puzzling then that – with all the pressing issues facing our country today – some members of Congress are choosing to prioritize expanding the power and authority of the IRS at the expense of taxpayers and their privacy.

Attack on Roth IRAs Is an Attack on Careful Savers

Americans are retiring later than they ever have. According to the most recent data, more than 20% of Americans over 65 years old are working or actively looking for work. This is nearly double the rate in 1985. Further, that same data shows that Americans – on average – are retiring three years later than they were just a few decades ago. With ever-increasing economic uncertainty due to lockdowns and other restrictions, it’s likely this problem will get worse.

Watchdog to Congress: Stop all Negotiations on $3.5 Trillion Budget Until Public Hearings are Held

Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) urged Members of Congress to step out of the closed door meetings and talk with taxpayers about the $3.5 reconciliation package. As Americans face the harsh realities of a Biden Economy with high inflation and product shortages, their representatives in Congress should be holding public hearings and meeting with their constituents instead of negotiating higher spending and taxes behind closed doors. No further negotiations should take place until public hearings and townhall meetings are held.

Three Takeaways from Latest Report on Postal Problems

From surging red ink to service standard slowdowns to transparency and privacy problems, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has been experiencing no shortage of issues. It’s difficult to put a finger on what exactly has gone wrong at America’s mail carrier, and outside analyses have been few and far between. Fortunately, longtime policy scholars Dr. Robert J. Shapiro and Isaac Yoder recently released a thorough analysis of the USPS’ ills. While it’s difficult to summarize the agency’s issues even in 45 pages, Shapiro and Yoder demonstrate that stagnant productivity, underpriced package deliveries, and a lack of transparency about cost attribution are creating a perfect storm of postal problems.
