TPA’s 2021 Taxpayer Turkeys

The pumpkins have been put away, the Butterballs are selling fast, and the Philadelphia Eagles are in a futile hunt for a Wildcard spot in the NFL playoffs. Thanksgiving is almost here! But before digging in on the stuffing and cranberry sauce, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) would love to serve you a healthy helping of Taxpayer Turkeys. Given the soaring national debt and out-of-control regulations, there was no shortage of options this year (but a shortage of everything else). But we did manage to narrow it down to three: Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D–Minn.), Sen. Tom Cotton (R–Ark.), and Baltimore City’s State Attorney Marilyn Mosby.

Prescription Price Controls Harm Access to Life-Saving Medication

It is no secret that the costs of prescription drugs are very high in the United States. Studies from Harvard Medical School indicate that one in four American patients have foregone a prescription because the cost was too high. With the costs of everything else beginning to rise due to the pandemic, inflation, and the global supply chain crisis, it is even more possible that more Americans will have to choose between treating their illnesses and affording basic necessities. This is unacceptable.

R Street Institute Report Details Better Approach to Tech Policy

Amidst a struggling economy, global pandemic, a supply chain crisis, and record deficits, lawmakers on Capitol Hill are spending quite a lot of time going after America’s tech companies. The latest iteration of this trend is the introduction of a pair of antitrust bills in the House of Representatives. However, like most of the efforts to go after these companies, the new regulations would come with a whole host of unintended consequences. The R Street Institute recently released a report detailing the issues with these bills, along with recommendations for a better approach.

Global Corporate Minimum Tax is a Step Backward

As the Biden administration struggles to pass its destructive tax policies through Congress, 136 countries took a step backward when they agreed to a 15% global corporate minimum tax. In essence, this agreement will deter companies from bringing businesses to low-tax nations by ensuring that there are no more low-tax nations. This is especially foolish during a global supply chain crisis that could stretch on for months.

The Democrats Desperate Attempt at a Wealth Tax

Negotiations in Washington continue on how to pare down the $3.5 trillion tax-and-spend reconciliation bill to a point where it’s acceptable to both hyper progressive and blue dog Democrats. As such, some of the more egregious taxes and spending items are reportedly being stripped out of the new text during talks. Unfortunately, it does not appear that the idea of a wealth tax is on the chopping block. This is a shame considering the proposal would hamper investment and is almost certainly unconstitutional.

Watchdog Calls for USPS Reform After $4.9 Billion Loss

The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) called on the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to reverse course after the agency reported a staggering $4.9 billion loss for fiscal year (FY) 2021. According to the agency, the “adjusted” loss climbs to $6.9 billion after excluding “non-cash workers’ compensation adjustments for the impacts of actuarial revaluation and discount rate changes.” Large losses at the agency continue, despite the USPS’ push to implement its 10-year-plan which includes the slower delivery of first-class mail. The agency reported $2.4 billion in controllable losses, undercutting the notion that net losses are beyond the agency’s control. In total, the USPS has lost more than $90 billion over the past fifteen years.
