Why China Could Revolutionize Global Tobacco Harm Reduction

China has just amended its tobacco monopoly law to include e-cigarettes, as Filter reported. This means that vaping products and their manufacturers will be regulated strictly by the Chinese government under the same process as cigarettes. It is unclear exactly what the new regulations will mean in practice—we know that companies will be required to obtain production licenses. But it could be that China is about to revolutionize global tobacco harm reduction.

The Dangers of Misinformation on Vaping

Earlier this month, news outlets all over the world reported breathlessly on new research which claimed to find that e-cigarette users were 15 percent more likely to have a stroke at young age than smokers. News sources as diverse as the Daily Mail in the UK, the South African Sunday Times, and all major U.S. TV stations picked up on it ensuring that a large portion of the global population were exposed to this bad news. The problem is that this “research” was at best, highly misleading and, at worst, plain wrong.

There are a number of sure things that come along once Thanksgiving is over. Christmas music will dominate the airwaves. Lights will go up all over town. Another certainty for the Christmas season in Washington, DC is that Congress will let a mountain of “must-pass” legislation wait until the very last minute, putting the nation on the brink of a government shutdown. Added IRS Funding Spells Bad News for Minority Communities

The Biden administration is scrambling to come up with ways to pay for its trillions of dollars of social program proposals. One such way they’ve proposed to do this is to give the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) more funding to go after potential tax cheats. Proponents say more money for the IRS will pay for itself by allowing the agency to go after millionaires and billionaires who are underpaying on their federal tax returns. However, if the IRS’s past track record is any indication, it will not be the rich and powerful that come under their microscope.
