2021 New Year’s Resolutions

As the New Year begins, members of Congress will inevitably commit to all sorts of resolutions ranging from weight loss to quitting smoking. While there’s plenty of waist watch going on, lawmakers have yet to engage in serious waste watch. As officials make promises to be healthier in their own lives, they aren’t making it easier for people to do the same as they drag their feet in making reduced-risk tobacco products available. These products have helped millions of Americans quit their deadly smoking habits. It is possible for national, state, and local leaders to better themselves in the New Year while making sure that the government works better for all Americans. Here are some New Year’s Resolutions for Republicans and Democrats.

Profile in Courage: Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett

During what is supposed to be a merry time spent with family, the coronavirus has wrought a terrible toll. With now more than 3,000 daily deaths across the country, there are countless hospitalizations and widespread economic calamity. Fortunately, scores of talented scientists have produced multiple vaccines capable of finally beating back the virus. One such researcher, viral immunologist Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, worked tirelessly to help accomplish a feat that would ordinarily have taken a decade. Through her collaborations with private industry, Dr. Corbett used her knowledge and training of microbiology and immunology to help produce an mRNA vaccine that can defeat the deadly disease. And for accomplishing this incredible feat in record time, Dr. Corbett is truly a Profile in Courage.

Naughty and Nice

The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) made a list, and we checked it (more than) twice. There have been plenty of naughty shenanigans by public officials this year, including runaway spending totaling roughly $4 trillion – or about $30,000 per household. The good news is that a few stalwart defenders of taxpayers and consumers have demanded accountability and refused to accept the surge of red ink. So, grab your cup of (hopefully spiked) eggnog, put on some season-appropriate tunes, and read TPA’s 2020 “Naughty and Nice” list below. Oh, and be careful when you stand under the mistletoe.

Watchdog Slams Massive End-Of-Year Spending Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA), a national taxpayer and consumer watchdog organization, urged every member of Congress to vote against the end-of-year spending bill that will cost taxpayers more than $2 trillion. Congress failed to do their job and pass the spending bills before the end of the fiscal year on September 30th. Also, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) admitted to delaying a COVID relief bill because of political considerations.

Latest Defense Bill May Irreparably Damage Our Greatest Asset, Tech Dominance

For those policy wonks rightly focused on turkey, football, and family this Thanksgiving, they may have missed President Trump’s latest Twitter musings in the waning hours of the holiday. Shortly before midnight, the president tweeted, “For purposes of National Security, Section 230 must be immediately terminated!!!” The President is referring to the law that shields tech companies from liability for certain content posted by third parties.

Protecting IP and Rapid Vaccine Development Go Hand in Hand

It has been an awful year as COVID-19 has spread across the globe infecting and killing millions of people. One of the few bright spots in 2020 has been the rapid development of a vaccine. Currently, there are multiple viable candidates poised to offer a serious glimmer of hope in record time. With any luck, these candidates will bring about a swift, successful end to the global pandemic and associated lockdowns. This success in vaccine development is a testament to the eradication of regulatory barriers at the U.S. at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and across the globe. Governments collectively stepped out of the way and gave private companies in the biopharmaceutical space the tools they needed to succeed.

OINK! Watchdog Slams Plan to Bring Back Pork-Barrel Earmarks

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) is increasingly concerned about rumors from congressional leadership about the return of pork-barrel earmarks. Bringing back earmarks will put our nation on a road to crony governance and even more profligate spending. Pork-barrel earmarks are projects that have not been requested by the particular agency and have circumvented established budgetary processes and procedures.

Facebook hardly a monopoly – either as social media platform or online marketplace

With the exponential growth of internet-based companies like Amazon, Facebook and Google, bureaucrats – as they often do – want to implement stronger controls in the form of heavy-handed government regulations. They claim that in some cases these companies hold monopolies, but that view is misguided, as small businesses and individuals that use these platforms have myriad choices due to plenty of competition in the market.
