Biden’s Outrageous Budget a Chance for GOP to Regain Spending Credibility

In the last State of the Union Address of his first term, then-President Bill Clinton declared to Congress – and the American people – that “the era of big government is over.” Clinton, a Democrat, in tandem with a Republican Congress would end up balancing the budget by the end of his time in office. Fast forward a little over two decades and the nation is running trillion dollar deficits and a new administration is aiming spending and taxation higher than any of its predecessors.

Did the CDC’s Lack of Transparency Lead to More EVALI Deaths?

In a world rampant with fake news, the CDC should be better than pundits and deliver the facts. In its failure to report the true cause of vaping-related lung injuries, the agency has balked at its mission statement and rather than saving lives, may very well have caused more deaths among THC vape users.

A Global Corporate Tax Rate Would Weaken the Global Economy

It’s lonely at the top. Prior to the passage of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the U.S. had the highest corporate tax rate in the industrialized world. Prior to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, companies such as Burger King inverted and moved out of the country due to the sky-high tax burden. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act slashed the corporate tax rate from 35% (nearly 40% with state corporate taxes) to 21%, spurring businesses to hire more workers, raise salaries, and expand operations.

Time Is Overdue to Rename World No Tobacco Day to World No Cigarette Day

May 31, 2021, is the 34th anniversary of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). This year, the WHO’s WNTD theme is “Commit to Quit.” It is not surprising that the anti-tobacco zealots at WHO would emphasize “quitting.” The world has entered a new era in which millions of adult smokers have quit combustible cigarettes by switching to tobacco harm reduction products, including e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, smokeless, and snus. Unfortunately, as long as no tobacco holiday is celebrated, there is a concern that many (including the WHO) will continue to not acknowledge tobacco harm reduction, and ultimately fail adult smokers around the world.

World Vape Day: Millions of Adult Smokers Have Quit, But Danger Looms

Today, May 30, is World Vape Day. Created by consumers of e-cigarettes, World Vape Day is the day to celebrate the millions of American adults that have quit smoking with the use of vapor products. It is also a day to combat the World Health Organization’s (WHO) anti-science stance on tobacco harm reduction products.

Profile in Courage: Rev. Al Hathaway

By all accounts, “Charm City” is going through a tough time. Baltimore has a well-known corruption problem and scandal-ridden public officials respond to criticism by attacking the media rather than apologizing or addressing the sources of scandal. Fortunately, a handful of prominent figures have been key to speaking out against the corruption plaguing Baltimore. In particular, Union Baptist Church senior pastor Dr. Al Hathaway has been a leader in Baltimore who hasn’t wavered in supporting Inspector General (IG) Isabel Cumming’s efforts to hold Baltimore’s powerful accountable for their crimes against public trust. And for standing resilient against the forces holding back his beloved city, Rev. Al Hathaway is absolutely a Profile in Courage.

Comment to All Party Parliamentary Group for Vaping UK Parliament Regarding Regulating Tobacco Harm Reduction Products

Although the US does provide valuable insight into possible regulations of vapor products, the UK should not endorse any policies that are more restrictive than the US’s PMTA. Although many manufactures in the United States have made it past acceptance, the process of testing each individual product, including thousands of different flavored e-liquids, may be too expensive for most small manufacturers. Any and all policies must take into consideration the cost and burden on small businesses.

Lawmakers Must Expand, Not Roll Back, Immediate Expensing

It’s difficult for entrepreneurs to make critical investments into their companies without attracting unwanted scrutiny from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). And by all indications, this scrutiny will only increase over time. While companies are currently allowed to fully deduct certain investments (short-lived assets) from revenues thanks to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), this pro-growth policy will begin to phase out starting in 2022. Some policymakers want to make the tax code even more onerous by nixing current rules that allow energy businesses to immediately deduct intangible drilling costs from their earnings. Ending these deductions would stymie growth in the energy sector, spooking investors and leading to higher prices at a time when gas prices are already skyrocketing. Lawmakers should push for permanent, immediate expensing across all sectors, rather than punishing businesses they don’t like.

Consumer Watchdog Blasts D.C.’s Amazon Lawsuit

The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) is greatly concerned about the D.C. Attorney General’s planned lawsuit against Amazon. This is yet another intrusion on the ability of private companies to dictate their own terms of service. Should this lawsuit be successful, it will most likely hurt the same small businesses it was ostensibly meant to help.
