Testimony before the New Mexico House of Representatives Health and Human Services Committee Regarding the Cigarette and Tobacco Products Tax

As the nation continues to deal with the economic impact of COVID-19, many lawmakers are considering increasing excise taxes on tobacco and vapor products. Although, excise tax increases on such products do result in an immediate surge in revenue, sin taxes are unreliable and decrease over time. Further, lawmakers should refrain from increasing taxes on tobacco harm reduction products as such products are significantly less harmful than combustible cigarettes and have helped millions of American adults quit smoking.

Comment to National Treasury of The Republic of South Africa Regarding Taxation of Electronic Nicotine and Non-nicotine Delivery Systems

As governments attempt to address the critical issue of youth use of age-restricted products (including electronic cigarettes and vapor products), many have put forward policies to enact draconian excise taxes on vapor products. Although addressing youth use is laudable, policymakers should refrain from policies that would affect adult access to tobacco harm reduction products. Rather than limit adult access of such products, The Republic of South Africa should engage in a more enlightened tobacco control policy which recognizes the benefits that reduced risk nicotine products can offer.

Op-Ed: The CDC is mimicking anti-vaxxer rhetoric in its messaging on nicotine

Imagine waking up one morning and reading the following statement from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): “Hundreds of people have been hospitalized due to side effects of Covid19 vaccinations. Being vaccinated risks known adverse consequences of blood clotting and cardiovascular problems.” Also imagine that the CDC failed to mention the hugely greater advantages of taking the vaccines for hundreds of millions of people. You would, quite rightly, think they had taken leave of their senses.
