WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) applauds the approval of the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) order on 5.9 GHz spectrum rules. This critical band of spectrum has lain dormant for far too long. The reallocation of significant portions of this band for unlicensed use is a long overdue change that will have tangible benefits for American citizens.

In response to the order’s approval, TPA Vice President Patrick Hedger offered the following statement:

“The FCC should be applauded for moving forward swiftly with this order on 5.9 GHz spectrum. For years and across administrations, this spectrum has been wasted because of needless red tape. As has been a common theme during his tenure, Chairman Ajit Pai has efficiently cut down these barriers to market innovation. This order strikes the right balance between supporting rising demand for Wi-Fi – especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic – and leaving plenty of room in the band to develop car safety technology. This is yet another critical step towards closing the digital divide in our nation.”
