WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) announced the launch of a new campaign, the Government Antitrust Accountability Project. The goal of the project is to shed light on recent bipartisan efforts to misuse or expand antitrust enforcement into areas unrelated to preserving competition to the benefit of consumers.
TPA Vice President of Policy Patrick Hedger offered the following comments:
“Regardless of the final outcome of the election and composition of our government, the bipartisan rumblings on more antitrust action against businesses make this project a necessary endeavor because Washington politicians and bureaucrats are always looking for new avenues to expand their power. With the legislative process largely stalled and activists wising to the game of the regulatory state, both sides have looked to either utilize or further open our nation’s antitrust laws as a backdoor for their agendas. As a group dedicated to the interests of taxpayers and consumers, we will not stand by and allow antitrust laws and enforcement institutions to be used to subvert the democratic process and impose new costs and other restrictions that are unrelated to preserving competition. The costs of breaking up companies and recklessly expanding antitrust action are ultimately passed on to consumers as de facto taxes. We’re excited to partner with many allies in a growing coalition that is wising to this game.”
