WASHINGTON, D.C. – As Americans prepare to go to the polls, uncertainty is thick in the air. Both political parties argue that this election will be a profoundly consequential one, but most pollsters and elections professionals say it is impossible to know for certain which party will emerge victorious. The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) preemptively congratulates all winners.
TPA President David Williams offered the following comment in anticipation of the results: “Regardless of the election outcomes, America will still be America: a great country, even with all of its warts and flaws. No matter what, the nation will survive and thrive, despite the machinations of the political class. America’s greatness comes from its people, not its policymakers.
“No matter what happens tomorrow or in the coming days, the mission of TPA will remain the same – to protect taxpayers and consumers from government expansion and overreach. No matter who is in the White House, or who controls Congress, tax cuts, fiscal restraint, and entitlement reform will remain critical issues for the millions of taxpayers and consumers TPA represents.
“No matter who the next President, Senate Majority Leader, and Speaker of the House are, the 2017 tax cuts are set to expire at the end of 2025. Extending the tax cuts should be at the top of list of priorities. The nation is saddled with a $35 trillion debt and spending continues to be out of control. Addressing the deficit and debt must be a priority for the next president and Congress.
“Dangerous policies like protectionist tariffs, burdensome regulatory red tape, and bureaucratic mission creep at agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and Securities and Exchange Commission will still require ardent debate, education, and defeat. Whoever ends up in power will face the same policy challenges and the same political temptations. TPA will continue to work with all parties to ensure that America becomes a freer, more prosperous, more innovative nation.
“Another thing to remember is that the Constitution was written to be a federalist, decentralizing political document, and America ought to be a federalist, de-centralized country. The hyper-focus on national elections is a symptom of the broad usurpation of state and local authority by federal policymakers. However, many of the decisions that affect citizens’ lives most acutely are still being made in statehouses and city halls across the country. Some of the best policy ideas today come from enterprising state and local leaders, who work with their neighbors to solve the problems they face. America was founded to allow citizens to govern themselves, and the local level is where meaningful participatory democracy is most possible.
“It is true that the outcomes of Tuesday’s presidential, senatorial, and congressional races will have profound consequences for how America is governed in the coming years. Regardless, America’s enduring character will remain. TPA will work tirelessly to help further the effort to attain a government that better secures each person’s rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
“TPA is ready to work with all parties to support policies that ensure fiscal freedom.”
