As Millions File and Pay Their Taxes, New Survey Finds Overwhelming Majority of Voters Oppose Expansion of IRS Authority

Washington, D.C. – Today, as millions of Americans file their taxes, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) released the findings of a new survey showing the public’s overwhelming opposition to proposals in Congress that would give the IRS unprecedented new powers. Nationwide, 75 percent of voters polled said that they do not support legislative plans that would give the tax agency new authority to prepare and file tax returns on behalf of millions of taxpayers. Additionally, 60 percent of voters said they would be less likely to support an elected official who pursued such measures, and 76 percent of respondents said they do not support allowing the agency to collect more personal financial information that it does not already have from Americans.

TPA President David Williams offered the following statement:

“Tax Day is the most stressful day of the year for many Americans. The results of the poll are clear: voters do not want the government to overreach in their financial lives, and any elected official that is not clear on their opposition to such proposals will have to answer to voters. Preparing returns would greatly expand the IRS’ role and potentially put the privacy of millions of taxpayers’ at risk. With outdated processing systems and excessive backlogs from the previous tax year, proposals to give the IRS even more authority over American’s hard-earned dollars is wrong and ill-advised.”

The survey results and its key findings memo can be found here.

Last month, TPA launched a Countdown to Tax Day as concerns regarding IRS backlogs and errors continue to grow. Please visit TPA’s Tax Day resource page for more information.
