WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, DoorDash announced it will acquire Instacart for approximately $17 billion, combining a leading restaurant takeout service with a successful and rapidly growing grocery store app. The deal is expected to close at the end of 2027 or early 2028, and DoorDash plans to keep Instacart’s brand, enterprise technology products, and app. However, heavy-handed bureaucrats at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Department of Justice (DOJ) may attempt to block the transaction; according to Rosenblatt Securities analyst Scott Devitt, the two companies have a “long regulatory path” to clear.

In response to the acquisition announcement, Ross Marchand, Executive Director of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA), offered the following statement:

“DoorDash and Instacart are American success stories. Both companies started as bold ideas and grew into delivering something consumers wanted, offering convenience, choice, and more time back in their busy lives. Along the way, they’ve created earning opportunities for millions of workers and helped local businesses reach consumers they would not have otherwise.

“Federal bureaucrats should allow consumers to benefit from a wider variety of product offerings, and a simpler way to get groceries. Local stores would also gain more access to modern technologies that would help them compete and grow. Federal intervention would only put those benefits at risk and send a chilling message to every entrepreneur and investor considering building the next great American company.

“TPA urges the FTC and DOJ to allow this transaction to proceed without costly and unnecessary interference. The government should not waste taxpayer dollars on another flimsy and speculative case against companies delivering value and convenience to millions of Americans.”
