The Taxpayers Protection Alliance slammed the Department of Labor on Thursday after the agency adopted a new rule targeting independent contractors.

TPA Executive Director Patrick Hedger offered the following comments:

“Once again, we are seeing the ramifications of an administration that is simply out-of-touch with the average worker. This new rule will force private companies to designate millions of independent contractors, gig workers, and freelancers as employees – threatening the flexibility of their jobs which they dearly value.

“It’s another ‘solution’ in search of a problem. We look forward to seeing the many legal challenges to this absurd rule, and support private companies using every legal recourse to protect their individual decision-making.

“What’s more, this rule was finalized under the supervision of an acting secretary whom the Senate has declined to confirm. The Biden administration’s brazen attempts to make radical policy while ignoring the advice and preempting the consent of the Upper House defy all principles of good governance.”
