For Immediate Release:

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) criticized members of Congress for voting for passage of H.R. 1, the “For the People Act.” This legislation will suppress political activism, drastically increase government campaign spending, and regulate political speech.

In response, TPA President David Williams offered the following comment:

“H.R.1 requires the public disclosure of donor information by non-profit groups like TPA. Free speech and privacy are at the very heart of the nation’s history. Our framers relied on the open exchange of ideas and often did so under the cover of anonymity. This legislation would have a profound chilling effect on free speech by opening up activists across the country to potential harassment.

“This legislation will also entrench established political actors by funnelling billions of taxpayer dollars to political campaigns. This is irresponsible and antithetical to our electoral system. We sincerely hope that the Senate will succeed where the House failed and reject this measure.”
