Washington, D.C. – The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) responded to rumors that Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y) will call for a vote on the American Innovation and Choice Online Act by early summer, despite a failure to incorporate input from fellow bipartisan members following a rushed markup.

In response, Patrick Hedger, TPA Executive Director, offered the following statement:

“This is yet another example of misguided priorities by elected officials in Washington. In the last several months, there’s been an increased need for enhanced cybersecurity. The American Innovation and Choice Online Act will do the exact opposite, opening up America’s digital marketplaces to a host of malicious actors.

“Congress ought to instead focus on more important matters that American families are facing each day. Record inflation and sky-high energy costs have made it difficult for far too many families to afford basic necessities. There are also increased shortages across the nation and the world.

“It’s clear that Americans want real solutions to the financial stress they feel every time they fill up their gas tank or go to the grocery story—not on breaking up or attacking American tech companies providing largely free or low cost services like Google Search and Amazon Prime. TPA calls on Congress to consider the real implications of these antitrust bills and prioritize American families’ pocketbooks and online security.”
