Washington, D.C. – Today, the Wall Street Journal reported that The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is preparing to ban Juul’s e-cigarettes in the U.S.
In response, Lindsey Stroud, Director of TPA’s Consumer Center, offered the following statement:
“This action by the FDA undermines harm reduction, science, and commonsense. While JUUL has been blamed for the so-called youth vaping epidemic (during its time on the market), youth use of both vapor products and combustible cigarettes have declined to epic lows. In fact, between 2019 and 2021, past 30-day use of JUUL-specifically dropped by 46.9 percent among 12th graders and by a whopping 75.3 percent among 10th graders.
“Despite this, FDA is listening to manufactured hysteria and organizations that seemingly want to keep cigarettes in the hands of youth, rather than allowing adults who smoke access to less harmful alternatives.
“With today’s announcement, FDA is ignoring the science of tobacco harm reduction as well as disregarding the efforts taken by manufacturers and public health that have enabled youth vaping rates to decline. This is a bad day for adult smokers who are looking for ways to quit deadly combustible cigarettes.”
