WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) praised the non-profit group Americans for Limited Government’s (ALG) new report—“Union Bosses vs. MAGA”— exposing how unions are undermining a pro-worker and pro-innovation agenda. Outdated federal policies grant unions exclusive representation rights and allow them to charge mandatory fees while union leaders repeatedly abuse these perks. The report notes that, instead of using often-required union dues to fight for better contracts for members, union bosses divert funds into their political war chests. These political efforts overwhelmingly benefit Democrats, even if members oppose left-wing policies.
Here are the key takeaways from the report:
- “Union leadership from all parts of the union movement is ‘irreconcilably hostile to Republicans,’ as Vice President J.D. Vance warned, and the evidence proves him right.”
- “Union dues, collected from the ranks of union members, are weaponized to oppose the president’s policies, fund lawsuits, protests, and political campaigns that ultimately undermine their own interests.”
- Union leaders are increasingly out of step with their members, who want lower energy costs … and a government that works for them—not against them. “
In response to the report, David Williams, President of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, offered the following comment:
“This is an important report from ALG that exposes unions. Unions are supposed to give voice to workers and fight for better and fairer conditions. But as the ALG report documents, this is rarely the case today. For too long, union leadership has operated under New Deal-era rules that shield unions from transparency and deny rank-and-file workers the information they need to make informed choices. Union bosses’ political goals actively undermine workers’ rights, yet employees too often cannot opt out of funding leftist political campaigns. The disconnect between union and workers’ political priorities has led to soaring energy prices and out-of-control rules from Washington, D.C. Unbridled union control must come to an end.
“ALG’s report highlights the many problems with giving unions too much power. It’s time for lawmakers to rewrite laws such as the Davis–Bacon Act and the National Labor Relations Act, which are failing to protect workers. The time for reform is now.”
