WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) announced the start of a digital and billboard campaign urging Arizona Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D) and Mark Kelly (D) to oppose the nomination of David Weil to head the Department of Labor’s Wage & Hour Division. The billboards direct Sens. Synema and Kelly, as well as their Arizonan constituents, to visit rejectweil.com to see why David Weil is bad for Arizonans, and all Americans.
In response, TPA President David Williams offered the following comment:
“As our economy is recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdowns that came with it, the federal government should be doing everything in its power to encourage and spur that recovery. However, the administration’s nomination of David Weil to the Wage & Hour Division threatens to walk that recovery in the opposite direction. Weil has promised to go after independent contractors, franchisees, and other non-traditional work environments in his role. At a time when Americans need economic flexibility the most, Weil’s nomination threatens to pour cement around their shoes.
“This is particularly threatening to workers in states like Arizona, home to more than 150,000 workers in the franchise industry. All of these jobs are at risk if Weil is able to implement his agenda. The state also houses roughly 450,000 independent contractors, many drawn to Arizona’s favorable climate and costs of living. The health of Arizona’s economy depends on these workers and these hundreds of thousands of Arizonans rely on the flexibility these jobs afford them.
“As a result, it is critical that Sens. Sinema and Kelly oppose the nomination of David Weil when it eventually comes to the Senate floor for a vote. TPA is running a digital and billboard campaign to ensure their constituents are aware of the potential impact this vote will have on their livelihoods going forward.”
