Washington, D.C. – Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) released an interview with West Virginia small business owner, Clara Osterhage, which highlights the negative consequences for franchises and small businesses if President Biden’s Department of Labor Hours nominee, David Weil, is appointed. There are over 5,000 franchises in the state of West Virginia, including Clara Osterhage’s Great Clips locations, and these small businesses deserve a leader who is fair, impartial, and has the best interest of American workers at heart.

West Virginia Small Business Owner, Clara Osterhage, states in the interview:

“[David Weil] has a track record of not being favorable towards small businesses in general. He has a particular issue with the franchise business model. Most people don’t even know who he is, but most small business owners know exactly who he is because he’s posed this threat before in a previous administration.”

TPA is committed to standing up for small business owners like Clara Osterhage and educating Senators on the potential for regulatory overreach if David Weil is nominated.

TPA Executive Director, Patrick Hedger, offered the following comment:

“TPA’s stated mission is very clear. We are a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to educating the public on the government’s effects on the economy. David Weil’s proposals on independent contracting would do irreparable harm to West Virginia’s economy.

“David Weil would effectively end the practice of independent contracting, destroying a needed source of income and flexibility for thousands of employees across the state of West Virginia. The fact that a partisan academic like Weil can do that from a relatively obscure position within the Department of Labor highlights the pressing need for more public education and a rejection of his nomination. We were delighted that West Virginia’s own Senator, Shelley Moore Capito, expressed opposition to Weil’s nomination. We hope that Sen. Manchin follows suit.”
