WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, President Donald Trump confirmed that his administration is actively considering reclassifying marijuana from its current Schedule I status to a less restrictive category, such as Schedule III. Under its current Schedule I categorization, cannabis is paired with riskier substances such as opioids and hallucinogens, which is disproportionate to the lower risk profile of cannabis.
The restrictive standards of the Schedule I regime have been a constant impediment to the development of cannabis-based treatments, which have proven effective in treating conditions such as PTSD and other ailments.
In response to this development, David Williams, TPA President, offered the following comment:
“If reports are true, this is an exciting move forward. The rescheduling of cannabis away from a Schedule I drug would be a win for the country. Cannabis-based treatments have proved to be highly efficient, safe, and a lifeline for those people suffering from a number of maladies. Re-scheduling the drug away from this highly restrictive standard will be a catalyst for even more research and innovation that taps into more medicinal uses of cannabis for the benefit of Americans and the rest of the world.
“Rescheduling cannabis would foster economic growth, medical innovation, and provide a potential avenue for cost-savings for a burdened healthcare system. We hope to see official confirmation from the Administration very soon.”
