WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Biden announced on Monday his intent to renominate Brendan Carr, a Republican commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), to another four-year term. The announcement came along with plans by Biden to renominate Democratic Commissioner Geoffrey Starks and nominate Democrat Anna Gomez to fill the commission’s vacant post.

In response, TPA Director of Telecom Policy Johnny Kampis offered the following comments:

“Commissioner Carr has been perhaps the biggest advocate on the FCC for the growth of 5G wireless technology. That has been, and will continue to be, a boon for closing the digital divide in America, and will allow for future technologies that were once the stuff of science fiction dreams – smart cities and self-driving cars among them.

“Carr has also been a crusader for cutting red tape that has hampered the growth of high-speed internet infrastructure. The fight against big government will be important if all three of Biden’s nominations are approved by the Senate, giving Democrats a 3-2 majority on the FCC.

“If Democrats regain a majority on the commission, then one of their first orders of business will likely be to attempt to reinstitute the Title II regulations that previously hampered broadband growth. Advocates for lighter touch internet rules need an experienced fighter like Carr to remain in his post.”
