Washington, D.C. – On September 26, 2021, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) ran full-page ads in The Dominion Post and The Charleston Gazette-Mail re-iterating its opposition to the nomination of David Weil to run the Wage and Hour Division at the Department of Labor. In response to the full-page ad, The Dominion Post did a follow-up story explaining the controversial nomination.
In response to The Dominion Post’s story about the ads, TPA President David Williams offered the following comment:
“I am thrilled that TPA is able to educate West Virginia residents about the problems with this nomination. TPA’s stated mission is very clear. We are a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to educating the public on the government’s effects on the economy. As the story acknowledges, many of its readers do not know who David Weil is. Yet, his proposals on independent contracting would do irreparable harm to the West Virginia economy.
“David Weil would effectively end the practice of independent contracting in West Virginia, destroying a needed source of income and flexibility for thousands of employees across the state. He would also force workers to dedicate their money and personal information for the benefit of labor bosses. That a partisan academic like Weil can do that from a relatively obscure position within the Department of Labor highlights the pressing need for more public education and a rejection of his nomination. We were delighted that West Virginia’s own Senator, Shelley Moore Capito, expressed opposition to Weil’s nomination.  We hope that Sen. Manchin follows suit.
“The public has a right to be informed about these bureaucrats who could upend their work lives. TPA will continue to do everything in its power to ensure that they are and we anticipate more stories about this flawed nominee.”
