WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House Committee on Ways and Means will hold a hearing titled “Protecting Patients and Taxpayers: Cracking Down on Medicare Fraud,” examining the scope of fraud, waste, and abuse within the largest federal health insurance program, which costs taxpayers more than $1 trillion per year. The hearing comes as federal investigators target multi-million dollar Medicare fraud schemes, including sham hospices and phony psychotherapy claims. In total, improper Medicare payments exceed $50 billion annually.
David Williams, President of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, called for stronger oversight and accountability ahead of today’s hearing:
“American taxpayers spend more than $1 trillion annually to prop up Medicare. In exchange, they reasonably expect strict congressional oversight and a well-managed program that safeguards seniors’ health and keeps fraud at a minimum. Instead, waste, fraud, and abuse have exposed systemic weaknesses that policymakers have been far too slow to root out. Criminal networks have set up ‘kingdoms of fraud’ and continue to exploit gaps in oversight, draining billions of taxpayer dollars from the program while putting patients at risk. Congress and the President cannot allow this to continue.
“Medicare fraud is part of a broader pattern of waste across the federal government that demands urgent attention. From pandemic-era relief programs to longstanding federal initiatives plagued by mismanagement, taxpayers are repeatedly left holding the bag. With the national debt exceeding $39 trillion, Washington cannot afford to ignore the hemorrhaging of funds due to fraud and improper payments. Every dollar lost to fraud is a dollar stolen from taxpayers.
“Lawmakers should use today’s hearing as a launching point for real oversight and reforms, including more regular audits of programs, stronger whistleblower protections, and reexamining landmark statutes such as the False Claims Act. It’s long past time to act.”
