WASHINGTON, D.C. – With just one week until Tax Day on April 18th, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) continues to highlight the numerous issues and inefficiencies at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
David Williams, TPA President, offered the following comment:
“The dreaded deadline of Tax Day is just one week away. As Americans try to finish their tax forms, there is an added sense of uneasiness considering all the problems at the IRS. From the leaking of personal tax information and computers that are decades old, to a new army of IRS auditors, taxpayers are more nervous than ever as the tax deadline approaches.
“Just last week, it was reported that the IRS will allocate more than half of its additional $80 billion in taxpayer funding from the Inflation Reduction Act to enforcement measures. Instead of taking care of the never-ending customer service problems, or the data leaks of private citizens, the IRS will continue to expand its efforts to audit Americans at even higher rates. These audits often target low-income filers rather than the billionaires that the IRS claims will be audited.
“Reports have also revealed that the IRS’s technology is so out of date that they struggle to find employees who can use it. In 2022, the IRS had to issue 17 million “math error” notices to taxpayers.
“This Tax Day, Americans unfortunately can expect to see many of the same complications that have plagued the IRS in the past. TPA hoped that this year history wouldn’t repeat itself, but the same issues from past years remain unaddressed.”
