WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) slammed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for calling the House of Representatives back to D.C. in order to micromanage the United States Postal Service (USPS) instead of addressing Coronavirus relief.  Speaker Pelosi has also called for Members of Congress to host press events at local post offices across the country. There has been increased controversy over USPS shipping delays and “mismanagement” related to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and Speaker Pelosi has publicly criticized his management and capabilities.

TPA President David Williams slammed Speaker Pelosi’s strategy, stating, “the Speaker of the House has been spreading false information about the USPS for partisan gain. The politicization of the Postal Service is getting out of hand. Speaker Pelosi has had decades to push for reform at the USPS, and now that the issue is politically expedient, she is thrilled to engage. The USPS has more than $160 billion in unfunded liabilities and needs true reform, not an influx of taxpayer money or increased regulation.”

Williams continued: “Speaker Pelosi is feeding into the political drama surrounding the USPS instead of focusing on how to get the failing agency back on track. Pelosi has had weeks to help Americans get back on track due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but she would rather lob media attacks on Republicans for a good sound bite.”

Williams concluded: “Unfortunately, postal policy is being enveloped in a thick cloud of misinformation and fearmongering. This struggling agency has enough problems without Speaker Pelosi chiming in with more government regulation or a blank check. At such a critical time in our nation’s history, Congress should be focused on helping Americans get back on track and truly reforming the USPS, not parading around and spreading misinformation and political talking points.”
