Taxpayer Watchdog Begins Countdown to Tax Day Concerned with IRS

Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) launched a Countdown to Tax Day as concerns over Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issues grow. The 2022 filing season is well underway and approximately 24 million Americans are still waiting for last year’s tax return. While many Americans still wait on returns, reports show nearly half of all audits in 2021 targeted the poorest Americans. A tactic the agency has admitted is due to lower income American’s inability to access resources to fight to back making the process easier for the government and boosting revenue.

Op-Ed: Oil Windfall Tax Makes a Bad Situation Worse

Gas prices are in the news again for all of the wrong reasons. According to data from AAA, the national average price for regular gas is now roughly $4.33 per gallon. In some states (like California), the average is as high as $5.74 per gallon. These figures represent a 51 percent increase from this time last year. Part of this has been attributed to the impact of the war in Ukraine. However, U.S. government policies toward spending and energy have no doubt been a major cause. And, the response of some members of Congress is to make the cost of gas even higher with a new tax.

New Federal Communications Commission (FCC) maps may be ready this summer. The hope is that these new maps will help identify the areas of the country that are lacking broadband service. With billions of taxpayer dollars slated to be spent to close the digital divide, these updated maps are sorely needed to ensure that taxpayer dollars aren’t wasted and that broadband is deployed to the areas of the country that need it the most.

The Biden administration has recently declared the week of March 6-12 as National Consumer Protection Week. In its declaration, the administration remarks that “it is important that consumers are fully informed about their rights and the potential risks in the marketplace.” While the declaration specifies certain consumer issues including “price gouging, stealing money, harvesting personal information,” as worth addressing, there is one major consumer category that has not been afforded the same type of transparency in the name of consumer protection: tobacco harm reduction.
