FDA Reform: Commonsense Fixes to the Drug Approval Process

Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) released a report on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s Drug Approval Process. Drug approvals are at their lowest since 2016 as developers spend $2 billion and roughly a decade to get a single product approved. TPA’s report addresses these shortcomings and provides evidence-based recommendations for reform.

Lawmakers End FDA’s War on Lab Animals

Billions of people worldwide benefit from access to safe, effective drugs that often originate and are approved in the U.S. Sadly, many of these medications have come at a terrible cost. About 50 million animals, ranging from rodents and monkeys to cats and dogs, are used by American researchers in experiments each year. This often-cruel practice has been pushed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which until now has mandated animal testing for new drugs.

While addressing youth use of age-restricted products is laudable, lawmakers must refrain from prohibitionist bans on both products that adults responsibly consume and on products that may help adults quit smoking. Youth use of traditional tobacco products has reached record lows, while youth vaping has halved in recent years. Bans will only force adult consumers to seek out illicit products from clandestine sources, which may cause more harm.

Testimony before the Hawaii Senate Committees on Health & Human Services and Consumer Protection & Commerce Regarding the Taxation of Electronic Cigarettes

While addressing youth use of age-restricted products is laudable, lawmakers must refrain from imposing excise taxes on alternatives to the most dangerous form of tobacco, combustible cigarettes. E-cigarettes are significantly less harmful and their use should be encouraged, not taxed. An excise tax will only deter their use among adults who are unable and/or unwilling to quit smoking.
