Washington, D.C. – The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) today launched a statewide ad blitz to oppose House Bill 1232 in Colorado.

“The bill would empower the unelected Commissioner of Insurance to mandate arbitrary healthcare price control based on numbers chosen by politicians, to the benefit of Big Insurance,” said David Williams, TPA President. “Big Insurance says they’re helping patients, but they’re really just lining their pockets, as usual, by lowering the amount they have to pay out on claims.”

“TPA’s campaign, ‘No Big Handouts for Big Insurance,’ aims to protect patients and doctors from the insurance industry’s greed,” said Williams. “Price controls through government rate-setting are really just big handouts to Big Insurance and will hurt patients and lead to worse healthcare for everybody.”

The statewide ad campaign began running today on multiple digital channels. The website www.NoBigHandoutsForBigInsurance.com was also launched today. The campaign extends a longstanding position of TPA to oppose rate-setting and price controls in healthcare.

“We are getting the word out: Rate-setting ultimately results in fewer doctors, ambulances that can’t take you to the hospital, and urgent care facilities that disappear from your neighborhood,” said Williams. “We’ve seen the results already if you look to places like California where consumer complaints have gone up and hospitals have had to close their doors because of price controls. Importing rate-setting from California would be a bad idea for Coloradans.”

“Through our campaign, we’re asking Coloradans to contact their legislators and demand that they oppose House Bill 1232 and find solutions to lower healthcare costs that do not involve government rate-setting or price controls,” said Williams. “The COVID-19 pandemic is not the time to pass a law that makes it harder for sick patients to get the care they need.”
