WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA), a national taxpayer and consumer
watchdog organization, released a new ad today as big insurance companies are once again
attempting to use the debate over surprise medical bills to pass misguided legislation that will hurt
patients and frontline healthcare workers. With Congress once again in discussions to address
surprise medical bills, insurers have reignited their campaign to pass a harmful rate-setting scheme
(price controls), which would allow insurance companies to set their own reimbursement rates for
healthcare which will lead to doctor shortages, hospital closures, and loss of access to care for
patients. The six-figure ad buy begins running tomorrow across digital platforms.
TPA President David Williams noted, “Big insurance companies continue to push for rate setting
price controls and are now using the lame duck session in Congress to try to pass legislation that
would hurt patients and doctors during a global pandemic.” Williams continued, “Any legislation
containing rate setting is a giveaway to insurance companies and should be rejected by every
member of Congress. Congress must instead move forward with a fair and proven solution that
protects patients and doctors instead of big insurers. The COVID-19 pandemic is not the time to pass
a law that makes it harder for sick patients to get the care they need.”
