Dear Senators Cassidy and Wicker:
As you debate and consider health legislation for the remainder of this Congress, the undersigned groups representing millions of taxpayers and consumers commend you for introducing bills seeking to address the surprise medical billing issue which do not include government rate-setting or price controls.
S. 1531, the “STOP Surprise Medical Bills Act,” and S. 4185, the “End Surprise Medical Bills for Air Ambulances Act of 2020,” take different approaches to solving the surprise medical billing issue. What they have in common, however, is that they propose solutions which do not rely on harmful government price controls and rate-setting.
Other legislative approaches take another path. Rather than grappling with the hard issues that give way to surprise medical bills, these products resort to government price controls, something that conservatives have always and everywhere stood strongly against.
Doctors, nurses, and patients are grateful for your work in ensuring a strong healthcare system during, and after, this crisis. We look forward to working with you on this complex policy matter and offer our support for your efforts to avoid harmful price controls.
Sincerely,
