WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, it was reported that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has contracted nonprofit, New America, to conduct a study on creating a government run tax preparation system. The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) sounds the alarm on the IRS’s latest conflict of interest.

In response, TPA President David Williams, offered the following comment:

“When the Inflation Reduction Act gave $15 million to the IRS to conduct a study on creating a government prepared tax preparation system, it was feared that the federal government already had its answer and wasn’t interested in a subjective study.  With New America doing the study, taxpayers’ fears have come true.

“From frequent conflicts of interest to privacy issues at the IRS, TPA is not surprised that the IRS continues to act in a way that does not serve the best interest of American taxpayers. It’s clear the IRS’ new study will not be an objective one. The agency should have instead chosen an organization that simply has no opinion on the IRS—and certainly not one that has a bias in favor of the IRS.

“The IRS has been rifled with difficulties and taxpayers should remain in control of their hard-earned dollars, not the IRS. The agency hasn’t been capable of doing its duties already assigned to it—there is no reason to give them more power and responsibility.

“It’s clear—let’s not make the government our accountant.”
