WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, February 19th, the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions is set to consider the nomination of former Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.) to be Secretary of Labor. Chavez- DeRemer has a concerning history of supporting anti-worker, anti-business, and anti-innovation regulations. This includes the PRO Act, which would further constrain a difficult job market.

The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) calls on President Donald Trump to rescind this nomination and the Senate to oppose Chavez-DeRemer’s confirmation if brought to a vote.

In response, David Williams, TPA President offered the following comment:

“Confirming Chavez-DeRemer as Secretary of Labor would be a mistake. The President should immediately reconsider this nomination. Chavez-DeRemer has a history of supporting Biden-era legislation that threatens the flexibility of American workers and businesses. Her support of bills like the PRO Act is evidence of her congressional record of allegiance to labor unions, rather than workers. This will not help in revamping an economy faced with a variety of difficulties

“The economy needs a labor secretary focused on pro-growth and pro-innovation policies. Instead, Chavez-Deremer has focused her time and energy on restrictive regulations and support of anti-growth groups. The American economy cannot sustain another period of prioritizing labor unions at everyone else’s expense. Workers need flexibility to pursue the opportunities that put them in the best position to succeed. Legislation like the PRO Act would implement a rigid definition of employment that would rob them of such flexibility. Anyone with this mindset cannot lead the Department of Labor.

“The Senate should strike down her nomination as a sign of support for American workers and businesses. The Secretary of Labor should be committed to prioritizing a free and flexible worker economy, by enabling entrepreneurial freedom and promoting growth along the way. Unfortunately, Chavez-DeRemer is the opposite of this. It is for these reasons, among many others, that TPA opposes this nomination.”
