Washington, D.C. – The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) is urging Reps. Cindy Axne (D-Iowa), Jim Costa (D-Calif.), Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.), Angie Craig (D-Minn.), Antonio Delgado (D-N.Y.), Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.), Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), Tom O’Halleran (D-Ariz.), Kim Schrier (D-Wa.), Julia Brownley (D-Calif.), Salud Carbajal (D-Calif.), John Garamendi (D-Calif.), and Josh Harder (D-Calif.) to oppose the repeal of the stepped up basis rule in the budget resolution. These representatives correctly noted in a prior letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) that such a change would force family farms and ranches to sell their property to meet the tax burden.
In response, TPA President David Williams offered the following comment:
“For months, policymakers have noted how devastating the Biden administration’s planned repeal of the stepped-up basis rule would be for countless Americans, especially those in rural America. Such a tax move would amount to a second death tax, magnifying the pain of losing a loved one and nearly doubling the tax burden. Members like Reps. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) and David Scott (D-Ga.) represent districts where landowners stand to be particularly impacted by this new tax increase.
“Thankfully, these 13 House members were willing to break with their party’s leadership and advocate for their constituents’ best interests in this matter.
“Neither death nor financial woes know partisan boundaries. We sincerely hope that these members of the House Democratic caucus remember their words and consider the effect such a policy shift will have on the people they represent in Congress. There is an opportunity to craft a better way forward to protect entrepreneurial landowners across the country.”
