The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) has been examining the inner workings and management at the United States Postal Service (USPS). As part of our continued work, TPA is now examining drug shipments through the United States postal system. Last week, members of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee gathered to ask important questions related to our nation’s growing opioid epidemic.  The biggest question that was asked was how such dangerous drugs are reaching American communities, and what can be done to impede the inflow.

During the discussion, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) highlighted the role of the USPS and asked how the agency can better collaborate with law enforcement and identify structural changes for USPS to keep it from being the delivery device for hazardous and illegal substances.

After considering the vast challenges facing the USPS, the consensus among the expert panel was that the agency needs to employ more consistent collection and analysis of electronic data sets in coordination with foreign postal services. A recap of the discussion can be found on RealClearPolitics.

The USPS should have systems in place to stop these hazardous and illegal substances from being transported.  TPA encourages the Senate and the USPS to work together to address this critical issue.
