On May 13, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) sent a letter to the House of Representatives in support of the Debt Per Taxpayer Information Act, introduced by Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas). This legislation would mandate that certain public documents (like budget proposals) contain data on the national debt, such as the gross debt per taxpayer and assets net liabilities per taxpayer. Additionally, it will also mandate the inclusion of this information in every taxpayer’s W-2 form.

As America struggles to reign in an increasingly ballooning national debt, the Debt Per Taxpayer Information Act is a welcomed step towards transparency and accountability in the federal government. Ensuring that taxpayers can obtain a clear snapshot of the national debt is a basic step for an informed oversight of government spending. This bill will undoubtedly help Americans better understand of the burden that the national debt spiral can have in their livelihood.
