WASHINGTON, D.C. – As Congress votes to establish its House Rules for the 118th Congress today, the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) is encouraged by fiscally responsible measures which will protect Americans taxpayers and consumers. The rules package paves the way for needed spending cuts, while making debt-ballooning spending bills more difficult to rush through.

In response, TPA President David Williams, offered the following comment:

“We congratulate Kevin McCarthy on becoming the 55th Speaker of the House and are looking forward to working alongside Speaker McCarthy and the new 118th Congress over the next two years. As Congress is set to vote on the House Rules for the 118th Congress, we encourage members to practice fiscal responsibility and remain accountable to taxpayers and consumers across the country.

“TPA supports several measures in the Republican House Rules proposal. The mandatory 72-hour review period will ensure a multi-thousand page, multi-trillion dollar spending bill cannot be rushed through overnight. The package provides for oversight and needed cuts to defense spending. It also promotes regular order by involving individual members in the amendment and committee process. We also support the increased transparency and accountability this package will bring.

“Once the House Rules have been passed, it’s time for members to get to work and TPA applauds their first order of business: the Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act. TPA is also supportive of plans to establish committees to address threats from the People’s Republic of China and the weaponization of US government agencies against Americans online. We hope these committees will lead to meaningful data security legislation and needed oversight.

“TPA is hopeful that this new Congress will practice strong financial responsibility and rein in the size and scope of the federal government.”
