The Taxpayers Protection Alliance introduced model policy at the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) States and Nation Policy Summit regarding government-owned broadband networks (GONs). The model policy was also introduced at the summit by state Sen. Eric Koch (R-Ind.).
The model policy expresses that a state or municipality should exhaust all other options before pursuing a GON. The model policy echoes the concerns raised in TPA’s reports, GON With the Wind and GON With the Wind II, about the harm that these networks can cause to taxpayers. The model policy was voted unanimously out of ALEC’s Communication’s and Technology subcommittee last month and will be voted on by the full task force at the summit this week. Passing this measure will be a signal to state legislators across the nation that GONs should be a last resort, if employed at all.
The model policy can be read in its entirety HERE.
