On Wednesday, January 14th, TPA testified against HB 2157, a bill to regulate the development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI). In its testimony, Chief Regulatory Analyst Juan Londoño emphasized how this bill repeats the same mistakes seen in other state AI proposals such as Colorado’s SB24-205. This bill would impose significant reporting requirements for businesses in Washington state, while exposing them to intolerable amounts of legal liability by granting civilians a private right of action. This would seldom protect consumers but enrich litigious trial lawyers who will shake down businesses under the threat of litigation. TPA urged the committee to oppose this bill and instead look into how existing state and federal law can address some of the core concerns that the bill attempts to tackle. Read and watch the testimony below.
