Washington, D.C. – The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) is concerned with the most recent version of the flawed, “Journalism Competition and Preservation Act.” This bill would only hurt American consumers and allow the government to play favorites.

Director of Tech Policy, Dan Savickas, offered the following statement:

“The consequences of the deceptively named ‘Journalism Competition and Preservation Act’ will be devastating for the marketplace of ideas. Should this bill pass, it would pave the way for the government to determine who is and is not a legitimate source of news. It would also represent the government using antitrust as a tool to pick winners and losers in the market.

“There are already several regulations on the books with the FCC regarding media ownership and advertising, which prevent local outlets from competing with newer media. Repealing these would be a much clearer step towards preserving journalistic competition than a broad antitrust bill like JCPA. When government picks winners and losers, the losers are inevitably the American people.”
