Spending – The federal government spends $3.7 trillion annually, which breaks down to $10 billion/day or $7 million per minute.

This spending has led to a $1.4 trillion deficit and debt of more than $14 trillion.  The Congressional Budget Office estimated on March 18, 2011 that cumulative deficits will top $6.7 trillion from 2012 to 2021.

Government Waste – Waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement are prevalent throughout the federal government.  In December, the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform,co-chaired by former White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles and former Republican Senate Whip Alan Simpson (R-Wy.), identified 58 spending cut recommendations which would save $3.8 trillion over 10 years.

Also, despite a two-year moratorium, there is talk of bringing earmarks back to the budget.

Economic Effects–The consequences of runaway government spending and excessive regulation have detrimental effects on the economy.

Financing a government that cannot or will not leave within its means puts a tremendous burden on all taxpayers.

Excessive regulation also forces unnecessary costs on businesses and stagnates the economy.
